Ok so you’ve probably heard the phrase ‘intuitive eating’ on social media or podcasts but what actually is it all about???
First up, I want to make it clear that intuitive eating, unlike many diets, detox products and shakes, is not a fad. There is no strict diet, no unnecessarily eliminating food groups, no macro splits, no calorie counting or worrying about what you should and shouldn’t eat.
Simply put, intuitive eating is about listening to your body; tuning into what your body wants and needs. Eating when you’re hungry, stopping when you’re satisfied. It’s about eating to feel good, physically and mentally.
Intuitive eating doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time to learn to understand your hunger cues and what food, in what ratio (protein : fats : carbs), your body thrives off.
The two things I love most about intuitive eating are:
It helps you DEVELOP A POSITIVE REALTIONSHIP WITH FOOD AND YOUR BODY. You learn to understand what your body needs to be nourished and why you crave certain things. For example, I crave more carbs (pasta, sweet potatoes, rice, quinoa) when I’m run down and fatigued, I need more protein when I’m training more intensely, and I want dark chocolate when I’m on my period.
It’s TAILORED TO YOU. When it comes to nourishing your body there is no one size fits all. Some people thrive off a vegan diet, some people feel better eating Paleo, others take a flexitarian approach. But everyone can thrive off a way of eating that allows you to listen to, and respect what your body loves.
HOW TO START EATING INTUITIVELY
SLOW DOWN. Begin by taking time to eat and enjoy your meals. Really chew each mouthful and ask yourself, am I enjoying this?
HOW DO YOU FEEL. Note how you feel after eating. Overly full? Still hungry? Bloated? Gassy? Satisfied? It can be helpful to keep a food diary and jot down what you ate and how felt after eating it.
RESPECT YOUR HUNGER. If you’re hungry eat. Even if that means you need snacks between meals. But make sure it is true hunger, not boredom, thirst or comfort eating.
DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY. Don’t worry about what anyone else is eating, just eat what and when feels good to you.
