Beet Berry Smoothie Bowl

It’s no secret I LOVE a smoothie bowl. It’s like having ice cream for breakfast! But unlike ice cream, this beetroot berry smoothie bowl makes a great breakfast as it’s full of delicious nutrients your body needs for a great day.

Are Smoothie Bowls Actually Healthy?

Smoothie bowls are a great way to get extra fruit and vegetables into your diet. However, some smoothies can be very high in sugar making them less than ideal for breakfast.

3 tips to create a healthy smoothie bowl:

  • Stick to 2 or less fruits. Although fruits are a great source of fibre, vitamins and mineral, they also contain sugar and too much sugar of any kind isn’t great. Typically, I’d use a banana and another fruit, for example pinapple for a tropical smoothie.
  • Add a healthy fat. Fats help slow the release of sugar into the blood stream and increase satiety. Great healthy fats include: nuts, seeds, nut butter, or avocado.
  • Add protein. Like fat, protein improves satiety and aids blood sugar control. Sources of protein include: nuts, seeds, Greek yogurt, protein powder (look for one without gums or sucralose which can have a negetive impact on the microbiome).
  • Add ceylon cinnamon. Cinnamon is great for helping to balance blood sugar levels, and its a source of fibre and anti-oxidants. Why not try these apple cinnamon muffins.

What Makes This Berry Smoothie Bowl Healthy?

This smoothie bowl makes the ideal breakfast and is packed full of healthy nutrients, including:

  • Micronutrient rich spinach providing a plant based source of iron, vitamin K, vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), folate and magnesium
  • Antioxidant and polyphenol rich berries
  • Protein to improve satiety
  • Fibre rich fruits, vegetables, nut butter and psyllium husks to feed beneficial bacteria
  • Healthy monounsaturated fat from almond butter

Why Add Beetroot To A Smoothie Bowl?

My favourite ingredient in this smoothie is the beetroot. When I found out I had liver parasites (after a trip to Bali), one of the first things I started including more of in my diet was beets. Why? Because despite staining every towel in my house, they’re:

  • Blood cleansing
  • Energy boosting (dietary nitrates improve the efficiency of your mitochondria a.k.a ‘the power house of the cell’)
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • High in fibre for healthy digestion
  • Support bile flow which aid in the digestion of dietary fats
